Betsey Johnson é uma americana designer de moda mais conhecida por sua feminilidade e por caprichar em seus desenhos.  Ela também é muito conhecida por fazer uma cambalhota ao final de seus desfiles de moda.
Ela teve aulas de dança que inspirou seu amor pelas fantasias. No colegial, Johnson estudou no Pratt Institute, e depois formou Phi Beta Kappa pela Syracuse University , onde foi membro da Alpha Xi Delta fraternidade. 
 Após a formatura, ela passou um verão como estagiária na Mademoiselle revista.

A carreira de Johnson na moda começou quando ela entrou e ganhou o Concurso Mademoiselle. Dentro de um ano ela estava na casa- designer em uma loja de Manhattan Parafernália. Johnson tornou-se parte do movimento da moda e Youthquake cena underground de Andy Warhol,  juntamente com The Velvet Underground, Edie Sedgwick e Lou Reed. Em 1969, abriu uma butique chamada Betsey Bunky Nini no Upper East de Nova York Side. Edie Sedgwick era o seu modelo de casa e Johnson desenhou a roupa Sedgwick usou em seu último filme, Ciao! Manhattan.
